With the right care, an implant is a solution that can keep doing its job for years. Its success is decided not only at the clinic, but in the care that follows.
The first few days
- Take the medication your dentist prescribes, on schedule.
- A cold compress on the first day reduces swelling.
- Avoid very hot food and drink, and hard or chewy foods.
- Smoking delays healing noticeably; pause it if you can.
- Don't probe the treated area with your tongue or fingers.
The first weeks
- Keep the area gently clean; continue brushing as your dentist advises.
- A mild salt-water rinse can help the healing.
- Don't skip your follow-up appointments.
Protecting the implant long term
An implant cannot decay — but the gum around it can become diseased (peri-implantitis). To prevent it:
- Daily care: Regular cleaning with a brush plus floss or interdental brushes.
- Regular check-ups: An examination and professional clean every six months.
- General health: Uncontrolled diabetes and smoking shorten an implant's life.
