Brushing your teeth properly: a small habit, a big difference

A healthy mouth is built on daily habits far more than on expensive procedures. The technique of brushing matters as much as how often you do it. Here is a short but effective reminder.

How much, and when?

  • At least twice a day — in the morning and before bed.
  • Each session should last at least two minutes.
  • The night-time brush matters most; saliva flow drops during sleep, leaving teeth more vulnerable.

The right technique

  • Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline.
  • Brush gently, in small circular motions — pressing hard wears the gums down.
  • Don't forget the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • Brush your tongue too; it is a major source of bad breath.

Common mistakes

  • Brushing too hard: It doesn't clean better — it causes gum recession.
  • A horizontal "sawing" motion: It wears away the enamel.
  • Keeping the brush too long: Replace it every 3–4 months, or as soon as the bristles splay.
  • Skipping floss: A brush cannot reach between the teeth. Floss once a day.

Remember

Even the best home care is no substitute for regular check-ups. An examination and a scale clean every six months is the easiest way to catch problems before they grow. Contact us to book an appointment.
