"They'll fall out anyway" is the most common misconception in children's dental health. In truth, milk teeth handle chewing and speech and hold space for the permanent teeth. A milk tooth lost too early can cause alignment problems later on.
When is the first check-up?
The first dental visit is recommended after the first tooth appears — around age one at the latest. It catches potential problems early and helps the child get comfortable with the clinic.
What to do at home
- Start cleaning with a soft brush as soon as the first tooth appears.
- Limit sugary snacks and especially the night-time bottle (milk/fruit juice).
- Brush together with your child; imitation is the best teacher.
- Make brushing a game — never a punishment.
Preventive care
- Fissure sealants: Sealing the grooves on the chewing surface of the molars prevents decay.
- Fluoride application: Strengthens the enamel and builds resistance to decay.
